Logo Redesign

SYG wanted a detailed grotesque gargoyle with visible fangs and bat-like wings. They were open to new fonts and colors. Our version shows the gargoyle sitting in a traditional pose on the ledge of a building. Muted shades of blue and gray were introduced to give the creature a stone appearance. We also updated the slab typeface to complement the gargoyles features.

History

We partnered with David Tutmark and Oregon Guitar Studio to develop a brand for ‘Siempre La Guitarra’ (Spanish for ‘Always the Guitar’), their new classical guitar concert series showcasing the finest guitarists worldwide.

David wanted a brand that would attract a younger demographic to classical music. The traditional aesthetic often associated with the genre can be a barrier for some. To overcome this challenge, we introduced an illustration theme featuring a lumberjack from the Pacific Northwest with a passion for classical guitar.

Custom Typeface

For Siempre La Guitarra, we pushed the boundaries of visual harmony. The concert poster’s artwork, defined by negative space and sweeping curves, demanded a typeface to mirror its elegance. Enter our custom-designed condensed sans-serif font, a love letter to the visionary spirit of 1920s futurism. This exclusive typeface, currently offered in regular and bold weights, elevates the campaign with a touch of the avant-garde.

Event Posters

In late 2018, we embarked on designing a memorable poster series to sell at the Siempre La Guitarra merchandise table. Drawing inspiration from the geometric, round-cornered illustrations popular in the Graphicsbyte studio at the time, we crafted a fictional landscape featuring Mt. Hood as the centerpiece.

A lone lumberjack serenades the scene, nestled amidst the natural beauty. In addition we also created photo based posters using images from each artist, further amplifying event awareness.

2018–19 Tour Posters

16″ x 24″ tour posters were created using a traditional workflow – sketched by hand, scanned into Adobe Illustrator for vectorization, and then textured in Adobe Photoshop. For each subsequent show, the core design remained, but the dates and artist information were easily swapped out. An alternative design was also created focusing more on the lumberjack. This was a popular choice among fans and was also used on t-shirts and stickers.

2020 Poster: Fresh Take, Familiar Theme

A new, bearded character joined the Siempre La Guitarra universe for 2020. This mountain-themed poster, crafted entirely in Illustrator, featured him cleverly positioned within the shape of an eighth note. We even hid a musical Easter egg – the bird’s song is a David original!

Learning from past years, we included the entire lineup with a space-saving icon system and location key. Though the 2020 event was canceled due to the pandemic, the poster did see action at one show. In a testament to the design’s versatility, we were even able to repurpose it for another event in late 2023.

We also had the opportunity to showcase and sell our own prints alongside the event items.

Collect the Memories

Limited-edition prints: Both the white alternative and tour posters were available at each show. Postcards were available in 2022.

Guitar picks and stickers: Initially offered separately, these popular items were later combined into convenient guitar pick packs featuring a backstory about the iconic lumberjack.

Exclusive online merch: T-shirts and trucker hats were available exclusively through the Siempre La Guitarra website, encouraging online exploration.

Unique collectibles: In 2020, a limited run of branded glass nail files with wooden handles was created, primarily gifted to performers with a few extras available for purchase.

Extending the Experience

For the Siempre La Guitarra event series, a user-friendly website was built on WordPress to seamlessly extend the brand identity established through the event posters. The website’s design incorporates the same eye-catching color palette and captivating illustrations, creating a cohesive online experience that resonates with fans. This focus on consistency ensures a smooth transition from the visual appeal of the posters to the website’s functionality.

About the brand

When Trevor approached us he wanted his new brand to have a deep connection with nature and spiritual energy. We achieved that by building the brand’s color palette around the seven chakras. The logo represents growth and healing in the form of a  lotus flower/ cannabis leaf. To give the brand more personality we tied in an abstract Native American feather to be the focal point. This is a tribute to the owner’s musical background.

Deodorant Packaging

Inspired by the “Get Pitted!” philosophy, we crafted the Green Room Naturals packaging to reflect the brand’s commitment to nature and clean ingredients. This meant embracing minimalism, placing a central focus on the brand’s iconic plant symbol.

To further amplify the message of freshness and confidence, we opted for the Futura typeface. Its condensed style exudes both clarity and modern elegance, ensuring the packaging speaks volumes even at a glance.

Colors

The color scheme itself plays a subtle yet crucial role. Black packaging signifies deodorants infused with CBD, while white indicates classic, CBD-free formulas. This clear visual distinction allows consumers to easily identify the product that best suits their needs.

About the Gig

MJBizCON 2021

During the fall of 2021 Mark helped design the signage and print materials for the True Terpenes booth at MJBizCon. This event was held at the Las Vegas Convention Center. The show features vendors from around the world, giving the latest insights about cannabis culture, products, trends, etc.

This year the company had a backlit tower, four desks, and four podium stands. Almost every surface was covered in designed imagery. The podiums also had diffusers on them, so anyone walking by would be pulled in by a unique terpene aroma.

Display Development

It took several months of design in order to prepare all the moving pieces for this event. Posters, business cards, table tents, and social imagery were developed. The main focal point of the booth was the tower. It featured the companies latest product lines, Live Resin and Live Alchemy.

The tower was also accompanied by a seamless pattern of illustrated assets. These call-outs are part of the brand and represent ingredients found within the two product lines. Written facts about the brand were also displayed on all four sides.

April 420

April is a big month not just because of April Fools, but in the cannabis industry, 420 is practically a holiday. During April 2022 the company released a blog post about the origins of 420. The backstory took place in the 70s. So to fit the vibe, Mark illustrated a 1970’s themed 420 logo.

A background image was also illustrated so it could be used on the website and to asset the rest of the campaign imagery. April was also a big month for product releases. A social media giveaway went into effect. The 420 imagery took on many shapes to help promote the event.

A Symphony of Vintage Charm and
Modern Appeal

Driven by a dream to establish a popcorn shop exuding classic vintage charm, the founders of 240° Pop Shop sought to create a popcorn logo that would resonate with their target audience. Inspired by the melting point of sugar, the number 240 was chosen as the brand name, seamlessly incorporating a unique element that could be visually represented by the degree symbol (°).

In pursuit of the perfect typeface, Graphicsbyte delved into the history of popcorn, recognizing its emergence as a popular snack during the Great Depression. Vintage popcorn packaging showcased a wide range of typefaces, from script to serif/sans-serif. While Bodoni, a favorite sans-serif typeface known for its balance between thick and thin strokes, was initially considered, it lacked the desired blend of modern and vintage aesthetics. After careful consideration, Majestic Banner by Joe Prince was chosen, striking the perfect balance between the two styles.

For the kernel icon, meticulous attention was paid to detail in ensuring the correct type of popcorn was depicted. Butterfly kernels, which explode outward and are commonly used in movie theaters, were contrasted with mushroom kernels, which explode inward and have a more puffy appearance. Since the kernel was being used to represent the degree symbol, the mushroom kernel was deemed the more appropriate choice. Several illustrations were created, with only two receiving digital treatment. Classic illustrations often utilize cross-hatching as a shading technique, and this was incorporated into the design to enhance its vintage appeal.

In terms of color, the client desired a buttery palette that would avoid any potential confusion with other vendors at the Portland Saturday Market. Caramel tones were therefore excluded from the color scheme.

A secondary logo was also developed, utilizing the kernel as the focal point. This logo was designed with versatility in mind, allowing for use on stickers and other branding materials. The vision for the future is to incorporate this secondary logo into future packaging designs.

From Blueprint to Brilliance: The Evolution of a Popcorn Menu

The original idea for the menu was to keep everything text-based. This was a strategic move to get the ball rolling and allow the client to take photos of the product without having to worry about finalizing the design. Once the photos were taken, an updated menu could be created with more visual elements.

The border of the menu is made from single-stroke lines. The corners have white highlight shapes that play off the rounded cuts from old movie tickets. White lines are also added to the top and bottom of the border and used as abstract columns for the three main menu topics. Various-sized popcorn kernels were then added to the border to create more depth.

What is commercial illustration?

Commercial illustration is a blend between graphic design and illustration. The term is also known as “graphic illustration.” These designers can use any technique to create a visual style that is artistic but follows company guidelines. This form of design is often used when trying to create a deeper bond with consumers, products, and ideas. Like other areas in design commercial artists often meet with clients directly. They use both traditional and digital tools to develop concepts for advertisements and product packaging. Commercial artists keep open communication with their clients when developing various concepts. Usually, the client receives several options to choose from before a final decision is made.

Both graphic design and illustration have a unique set of techniques, artistic goals, and mediums. Illustration is the wild child in the art world. Illustrators often tell stories through visual scenes or creative typography. They want to convey emotion while adding a personal aesthetic to the design.

What is Illustration?

One of the most popular styles of illustration is the use of black, white and color. Pencil drawings can create in depth textures, sharp edges and soft areas. Other popular mediums include the use of ink which brings out contrast. Charcoal drawings are used for hard shadows, and sketching abstract forms. Illustrators often use different paints such as watercolor, gouache and acrylic to tell their stories. Watercolor creates soft tones while gouache paint is rich and has a fast drying process. Acrylic is versatile and can be used on many surfaces. In recent years lithography and print making are becoming popular choices again. Both techniques can produce a detailed look with fast turn around times.

Other styles of illustration include collage, etchings and woodcut art. In a collage artists use found objects and arrange them in a creative way to tell a story. Etchings is a timely process where artists scratch illustrations into metal. One of the oldest techniques is woodcut art. Artists use this method to carve into an actual piece of wood.

Illustrations can be created for fun, found in published media like books, magazines, posters, flyers and educational materials. With the help of tablets and computers a lot of illustration is now being produced digitally.

What is Graphic Design?

Graphic design is the profession of using visual content and compositions to solve problems with their target audience. Messages are communicated through color, form, line, shape, size, space, texture, typography and imagery. Graphic designers usually receive direction from branding strategies and marketing teams.

Graphic design exists in both print and digital worlds. Work can be found in packaging, business cards, logos, posters, fliers, email marketing, websites, etc. The visual identity (logo) is usually the starting point of a graphic design job. From there emotion, story, color palettes, images and other design guidelines are used to build a consistent brand.

The next step is to market the idea/ product. Traditionally this was done with printed materials such as newspapers, magazines, and flyers. Nowadays designers also use social media, email campaigns, Internet browsers and other online websites. The internet has provided many ways to create ads and get feedback from the users. UI/UX designers also market to their clients by creating games, apps, motion graphics, film, trailers, GIF’s and various web banners.

There are many areas of interest for graphic designers to specialize in. Publication designers create layouts for books, newspapers, catalogs and magazines. They use different forms of typography and imagery to help pull the audience into their story. Packaging designers create physical products for consumers. Then there is environmental design. Architecture is combined with landscapes to create ecological and aesthetic harmony using murals, exhibition displays and signage.

Planning a Children's Book

There is an art to creating a good children’s book. The first thing is to Google your idea and see if it already exists. It’s important to have a story that hasn’t already been published. Don’t get caught up with the main title of the book. Wait until the end to do that step because something exciting may come up. Once you know the plot of the book it’s time for character development. Characters should stand out with a quirky sense of humor, look strange, talk differently, or have an unusual habit.

Finding an Age Group

The next step is to figure out who your audience is. Proper age range will tell you how long the word count needs to be per page. The most common age is 3–7 which is about 750 words. Strong stories are straight to the point and use a hook to grab the audience’s attention. It’s good to start the plot/conflict early. Readers should know where the story is going by the fourth page.

Build A Problem

The purpose of the book should be built around a problem the main character has to solve. This could be a confidence crisis, another person or a mystery of some kind. This achievement shouldn’t come at ease and the character will need to work for it. Otherwise the story could be confusing for a young reader to understand.

Use Repetition

Using Repetition in words/ phrases or elements in the story is a great way for parents and children to remember the book. Rhyming words is a starting point but the book should be set up for illustrators. Repeating elements in the scene can be visually stimulating. When it comes to imagery be creative. Publishers are always on the lookout for something “new.” If the scene is in a “school” think of a hut on the back of a dinosaur instead. Once the main problem has been solved the next step is to end the story quickly. Referencing something from the first five pages is a great way to do this.
